 Raku Origins

The first half of 2008 has found Ramon back to his roots in the islands of Hawai’i. It is there that he has discovered renewed inspiration for both his ceramics and his music. Most recently he participated, after a 15-year absence, in a premier clay event on O’ahu, the island’s own Raku Ho’olaule’a, to which clay artists, from all over the country, flock. A 3-day raku-firing and camping extravaganza held along the beautiful beaches of Waimanalo, hundreds of artists glazed, burnished, inscribed, pit- and raku-fired clay art of all kinds: zen tea ceremony pieces, pots, sculptures, etc.  Steven Braun, raku artist from Montana, was the guest artist judging the competition of contemporary works, while the Urasenke Foundation was in attendance to judge the traditional tea ceremony pieces. Ramon took the 2ND PLACE AWARD for his tall lithium raku piece “Velvet Vog,” while a gorgeous traditional zen tea pot made by Jerome Heck took first place. All of Ramon’s pieces from the weekend event are for sale in the Raku Ho’olaule’a’s juried exhibit at The ARTS at Marks Garage at 1159 Nu’uanu Avenue at Pauahi in downtown Honolulu.

Also, check below for further details about Ramon’s return to the east coast October of ‘08 for a repeat of the CLAY, FIRE & SAND beach pit-firing weekend in Ocean City!
Ramon will return for workshops and events.  Call about availability at 703-725-8294.
